                        This evening finds me seated on an old cracker box trying to drum together my few scatterd thoughts in answer to your welcom letter which came safely to hand yesterday Old Ed is on his buns yet but by the fireing he heard today & yesterday dont know how long he will be our forces crossed the river / yesterday & have again taken posession of fredericksburg hights they say that the rebs are getting pretty strongly reinforced if they are I wouldent wonder if there was pretty warm work there yet we received orders to get ready to march at a moments warning but have not been ordered to go yet if we do have to go I hope it will be to victory for it werys a fellows constitution to be drove by the confounded graybacks & have them yelping out at every jump halt you damd yankee sons of bitches or I will blow hell out of you I had rather follow them than have them chaseing me but the scales will / turn once in a while you dont want to have your self march about toms getting love cracked I dont think he ever wrote a letter to the girl in his life he had lots of friends in the Co who wer allways willing to do it for him & when they got answers they would read them to the Co the boys would write the confoundest lot of stuff you ever heard they would put about 4 pecks of love in one letter & hers would be full as affectionate if there ever was a girl made [?] it was his
 
the pay master is here paying off the brigade again we will get ours in the morning it haint been / over three weeks since he was here before but we are perfectly willing to take it as fast as it comes but as it is about time for taps I must get my light out & get to bed the orderly has just been around & detailed one of the boys to go & guard the old paymasters money but a pretty responsible position to guard about a hundred thousand dollars I wouldent care if I was guard over as much as I could cary of it but money aint much of an object here a fellow can have a better time to home on one dollar than he can on 10 here but I must mark time for the present give my best wishes to all the boys also to yourself but mind and dont get in to a scrape 4 of july write soon to your old friend & well wisher
