Frederick B. Doten to Georgiana L. Wells, 26 March 1865
Head Qrs. 2d Div
March 26, 1865
My own Sweet Georgie
I received just now your letter of the 23d condoling with me on the hardships I am enduring, recovering &c. These hardships to night consist of a very comfortable Log house covered with canvass and a good fire place with a bright cheerful wood fire. Indeed darling we have not moved yet at all except yesterday we had a pretty sharp fight the rebs. attacking us / they commenced on the 9th Corps obtaining at first a little advantage (as they were hardly expecting it) but quickly regained the Enemy losing fearfully The 2d Corps was then engaged whipping the rebs handsomely taking many prisoners and covering the ground with killed and wounded They then retired to their entrenched line and we resumed our old position of one party of rebels consisting of 5,000 picked men only about 1000 returned / the remainder killed wounded or prisoners Fortunately the loss of the 2d Div was slight. Col. Moore Capt. Parsons, Capt S[?] Adjt. Hincks displayed their usual gallantry after which we all went to bed tired enough to sleep soundly.
This afternoon I have been busily engaged relieving a picket line and have just returned to find your dear loving letter as my reward, and I am in excellent health and spirits, longing / to be with you, to be petted and kissed and loved by my own Pet. What a contrast that would be to the stern hard life here. Night before last as I wrote you we played cards until midnight, merry and careless, and awoke at daylight to rattle of musketry and the roar of canon. Thank God we are still safe and happy. I am glad to hear Mrs Goodnow is is well. My love to her please, but another kiss to yourself darling.
Lovingly Fred
