August 31st 1863
 
Dear Sone I will now pencil a few lines to you I wrote yesterday and a few minutes after I mailed it we got orders to fall in ranks so we did and crossed the Tennissee River on the pontoon bridge and campt about 1 mile in the flat botom this morning we tuck up our march and in one or 2 hours came to the foot of the mountain we were divided 10 to a waggon and started up it was a hard job on men and mules we had to push most of the way for 2 miles some places there is rocks strate up for 50 feet high we reached the top at 1 oclock and rested thare is the pretyest spot I ever saw level as a floor the peak is so high we could see in Georgia Tennisee Alabama we left and now are 2 or 3 miles farther on we passed one house and some cleard land but it is verry poor corn knee high the timber is pine and oak the woods is thick brush pine shrubs and huckleberry bushes we are resting here and there will be a male go back so I thought I would give you a a hint of our moove I suppose we are going around to the rear of Chatinuga I must close for we go out on picket soon you write often the letters will follow us I cant tell where we will be one day ahead I forgot to say I am well and harty I got my woolen shirt verry wet it is so warm
