April the 9th 1866
Dear sister according to promis I will drop you a few lines to let you no that I hav landed safe at johns I had a pleasent trip of it we maid connection all the time we staid at layfett junction a bout 9 ours & then we started for clinton there we crossed the river on a boat to keokurk there we started for eddyville we got there a bout ten Oclok thursday night next morning we got on the stage & started for charriton we got to charriton friday night a bout ten o clock next morning I went to william Bakers & staid untill evning he got me in / a wagon it is a bout five miles from charriton John dident hardly no me nor I wouldent of new him he wears long whiskers & is smartly gray Eliza new me & I new her Larka & Emily is a bout grone they are verry good looking girls I think they has three Boys besids william ervin ervin is a great big boy I recon you would like to no how I like the country I like it fine so far the wind blows rather much charriton is a prety town it is tolbly large plase

Dear Aunt, as Aunt Lou has not finished out this sheet I will write a little we are all in good health you cant imageion how glad I was to see Aunt Lou & was so suprised to & I am so proud of my present you sent me I thank you so much for it. we have had a beautiful spring so far we havent had scarcely aney rain the boys is plowing for corn Mother has planted right sharp of garden I recieved a letter from Dave a few days ago they was all well out there he wrote he thought he would come home in 2 years I must close hopeing this will find you all in good health Sallie Grimes

I was so surprised to see Aunt Lou she dident look like I thought she would She brought me a present from you I am much obliged to you for it you sent some Calico Sally and I got a waste off of it Well I blieve that is all of the news I can think of from
