Moses Abbott to Dinah Luxford, 26 February 1862
Camp Griffin Feb 26th 1862

Dear Friend Dinah
It is with a sad and mournful heart that I take my seet at this time to announce to you the death of your Dear Brother He died night befour last which was the 24th with the putrid sour throat and I recieved the news to day while on drill where I recieved your letter He had been moved from whear he was when I wrote to you and I could not find whear he was the Capt and myself tride to learn whear they had carried him but all in vain for we heard nothing from him till we heard that he was no more He was carried to the United States genral Hospittal at Philadelphia and their past / away from the care and troubles of this world but while he was in his Co he was a trew and faithful Soldier always in his place and always prompt to duty. But the life of a Soldier for him was short for God saw best to take him home and I hope that he has gon to rest. Evry time that I saw him during his sickness he appeard calm and composed did not murmer or complain with his lot in the least but we see that thoes that were the most healthy while at home are the very ones that fair the hardest hear when sickness gets hold of them I hav escaped thus far the ills of camp life but who knows how soon it will bee my lot to graple with the monster death God and God onley knows but when that / time does come may I die as the Christian dies. . . . .

And Dear Friends one and all may God grant that you may hav the cumforting influences of the spirit of God to surport and cumfort you in this your time of need let me say to you one and all look to God in this your time of trouble God has seen fit to come very near to you and it speaks loud to you one and all Oh heed the warning voice of God and prepare to meet that dear Brother in and son in a better world than this a world whear their is no war or sin to trouble but cousin friends my heart is to fool at this time to write much and I hav not learnt a nough of the partickulers to write much and will write a gain when I get the whole / partickulers in regard to sending him home I shal do all that I can to hav it done but I am in rather a hard place to do eny thing in that line as he is on one side of the Potomac and I on the other side and I can not pass without a pass from Gen Brooks but the Capt says that he will help me all he can so I think that I shal make out

Pleas excuse this and consider that I hav not learned the partickulars a nough to write much

Pleas write as soon as you get this dont delay and tell me if it is the request of all that he should bee sent home                      Yours with respect
