Lines on the death of Joseph Luxford who died in the U.S.A. Hospital. Philadelphia, Penn. Feb 23d. 1862. Respectfully addressed to the bereaved friends.
Your household band is broken now,
You're stricken now of God;
A cherished one in manhood's prime
Lies neath the silent clod.
He sleeps not in by his mothers side,
Nor in the burying ground;
A soldiers grave his resting-place
Till the last trump shall sound.
You were not with him in the hour
Of sickness or of death;
'Twas not your lot to hear the words
Uttered with his latest breath. /
But let us hope that in that hour
When the Death Angel came;
He found that Jesus was his friend,
And trusted in His name.
Dear friends; God help you all to say
"Thy will not mine be done;"
And may you meet an unbroken band,
Around the great, white Throne.
