George W. Esser
George W. Esser was born on April 4, 1843, in Pennsylvania to George and Eliza Esser. His father was a landlord who probably died in the 1850s. Esser grew up and attended school in Mauch Chunk, Pennsylvania.

He served as a private in Company A of the 19th Pennsylvania Militia Infantry from September 15, 1862, until September 27, 1862. He then served as a private in Company A of the 34th Pennsylvania Militia Infantry from June 30, 1863, until August 10, 1863.

He returned to Mauch Chunk after leaving the army, and he married Physia K. Davis on April 26, 1866. He worked as a coal agent, and by 1870, he owned $5,000 of personal property. His wife probably died in the early 1870s, and he married Isabella Simpson around 1874. They had at least two children: Mary, born around 1876; and Isabella, born around 1879. He supported the Democratic Party, and he was elected prothonotary in 1879.

By 1900, he was working as an insurance agent. He applied for a federal pension in January 1906 but never received one. He died of interstitial nephritis in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on April 3, 1916.
