George W. Esser to James S. Line, 1 July 1863
Camp Albright July 1st 1863

Friend James
We are now stationed at the above Camp awaiting for equipments and drilling to soon go forth and fight the enemy. The first night I arrived at Harrisburg about 2. oclock in the morning and started immediately for Camp where I found all the boys in fine spirits and somewhat alarmed about a rumor that the place was invested and there was but one place of escape and that by the Reading Rail Road. We were without arms and consequently marched back to Reading until we were properly equiped for the fray which will soon come forth now. Troops are pouring in by the thousands making a grand sight when they are all out on drill. Jas Smith, Jas Donnelly and H. E. Eberle were elected our Commanders before I arrived which now appears to create a great deal of dissatisfaction in the manner in which the Election was managed, not more than about half being present. There is about a fifteen of us who will join some other Company to day if we can possibly get the transfer. This morning Charley Borman came into our mess and complained of having the tooth ache the previous night and presented quite a deplorable condition. Have you sold out the stable and store yet. If not what are the prospects for so doing. Jacob Runck's rope bill comes due about the first of this month. I think you had better send him / what money you have on account, stating that I have gone to war rather suddenly and that you would send the balance before long. Give my regards to all at the [?] and let me hear from you soon giving me all the news. Tell Wentz to excuse brevity and scribbling as I have nothing but an old stump to write upon

Yours Truly
