John E. Seacole to George Seacole, 3 February 1867
New Rochelle NY
Feb 3rd/67
Dear Father
Your letter of the 23rd of Jan'y was duly received also the one inclosed which was from my old pal in Brooklyn John Prasstie and i hope this will find your self and all the folks at home injoying good health as i am happy to say i am at present. I expect to visit the "Island of Manhattan" on about monday or Tuesday of next / week, when i will make you a New Years call. We got word of the death of Mr Pomeroy a day or two previous to receiveing your letter. I was verry sorry to hear it allthough i never spoke to the man to my present knowledge but from all accounts I guess he was a smart man.
We have had quite a spell of weather up hear for the last six weeks, sloop froze in and likely to be for a spell by present apereances.
We are improveing here now got another paper under way viz "the Weekly Advertizer" / whitch showed its face for the first time yesterday and bids fair to eclipse the "Pioneer". there is a terrible malady prevaling amongst us and many of our population has been allreaddy carried of and there is great fears of more who show symtoms of the desease, in other words Cupid "the little devil has been here and has fired his arrows with greate success haveing peirced the Hearts of quite a number who heedless of consequences have plunged head formost in to the sea of Matrimony" some without life preservers. God help them, but such is life and all things have / an end, but i think i am spinning this yarn to long so i will bring it to a sudden close and Remain Your Afec Son
John Searsley
P.S
inclosed I send you my ticket in the presentation festival which you may get the green backs for as soon as payable if it has drawn them
Jack
