Dear Mother
As I have a few spare moments I will write a few lines and but a few as I am writing by a very poor light from a candle I am rather tired so you must excuse the length of this. We arrived here this forenoon from Harrison Landing having marched from 70 to 80 miles. We were on the road six days. It was very dusty which made it very hard marching at times one could not see two feet ahead the dust was so thick. I suspose we go up towards Washington in a day or two at any rate direct letters to Fortress Monroe untill you hear differently some of the troops embarked at Yorktown We have had no mail for over a week. I have not received my / box yet and I do not suspose we shall get them untill we get settled at some place some of the boys have boxes that have been on the road four weeks. It seems good to get back here once more but things have changed since we left I am in hopes when I get the mail to receive the money I sent for for we have been kept short for a week past and if I had the money I could get things here. Well I am well and I hope this will find you all well write often Seth and Walter & Mr Plinney are well there are I think 12,000 of us here now some left to day My love to all in haste
