Robert C. McKinney and Sarah McKinney to James P. McKinney, 7 July 1864
At Home Cincinnati
July 7/64
Dear James:—
We are all well at present and I hope you are the same. I write these few lines to tell you that this box of pills in with this is for the diarreha. I am carrying the Witness again Fourth of July night he asked me to so I consented. In one of my letters I said I would send you some of my examination papers and I forgot to do it so I will now. Mary & my self sent a letter to you yesterday, so I have not got much to write about now. There were a great many accidents happened on the fourth; one boy in front of Adams express / was so severely burnt that he was not expected to live. some one lit a pack of fire-crackers and he ran in to put some out so as to have some for his own amusement when one exploded up his leg and lit some powder which he had in his pocket for firing of a pistol his clothes took fire & he was burnt severly; also a boy on our own street (George Hull) he was shooting of a small cannon he had. it was loaded and he had a fire-cracker-stem in the touch-hole he bend his head over it when he lit it, and the powder that came from the touch-hole went right into his eye & forehead and now his forehead is as black as any thing; and many other such incidents hapened also about 2 or 3 fires. Mr Spencer the minister who is to preach for us / for 3 months is as Mary told you staying at our house for the present. I have no more news at present, so Good bye.
I remain Your affectionate
Brother,
Robert.
Proverbs.
If sinners entice thee consent thou not.
A wise son maketh a glad father; but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.
By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.
If thine enemy hunger give him bread if he be thirsty give him water; for so doing you shall heap coals of fire on his head, and the Lord shall reward thee.
Robert. /
James. Mother wants you to divide the tea with the other boys that have no boxes and when that is done you can have more.
Sarah.
