George M. Crossman was born on November 4, 1858, in Sutton, Massachusetts, to Ferdinand and Adalaide Crossman. His father was a farmer who owned $2,000 of real estate and $200 of personal property by 1860. His father served in the Union army and died at Andersonville Prison in August 1865. His mother married Frederick P. Burr on June 12, 1866, and Burr helped to raise him. They lived in Sutton.
He married Harriet A. Parker on June 15, 1879, and they had at least two children: Frank, born around 1882; and Clifford, born around 1884. They lived in Winchester, Connecticut, and Crossman worked as a carpenter. He supported the Republican Party, and he was elected superintendent of water works in the early 1900s.
His wife died in 1913. During World War I, he traveled to France as a member of the Red Cross. He returned to Winchester after the war and resumed his work as a superintendent of water works. He died in Winchester on January 26, 1935.
