David Roper
David Roper was born around 1838 in South Carolina to Charles and Elizabeth Roper. His father was a farmer who owned $1,000 of real estate and $400 of personal property. Roper grew up and attended school in Pickens District, South Carolina.
 
He enlisted in the Confederate army on December 28, 1861, and he mustered in as a private in Company A of the 4th South Carolina Cavalry Battalion. Confederate officials transferred him to Company K of the 2nd South Carolina Rifles in 1862. The regiment took part in the Second Battle of Manassas, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, and the Overland Campaign.
 
He eventually earned a promotion to corporal. He was wounded in the left arm and left leg during the assault on Fort Harrison near Richmond, Virginia on September 30, 1864, and he died in Richmond on October 15, 1864.
