O what a unhappy night i have it is not morning yet but i am sitting on my little bunk by a nice fire trying to write these lines to you—i will see Colonel Miller today and try to get transfered to the 46 Ohio reg they are in our brigade and are campt near by on the mountain side they have reinlisted and will go home to they will go to camp Chace near Columbus so if i can get transfered to that reg i can come home nearrer and then i like to be with Ohio soldiers, they are not so wicked as the 6th Iowa no. the rebs are trying our lines like pened up hogs or cattle they want to get out to get something to eat we will give them hot lead
lonsom hours, they seam to pass sloly by and leave some trace of sorrow
but i will wate patiently for happyness of the morrow
When will peace reath her chains round us forever (When)
Now dear Ruth i am trying to be a christian soldier (that is my profeshion) yes and may the lord help me to do the part of a farther and husband to my family it grieves me to think if my imperfections,…yes i would like to be of more use ere i leave this world of affliction and more benifical to my wife and sweet children—i leave it to the will of god yes O i want to see you all and help to wipe away the tears of sorrow and pain
