Henry S. Cogley was born around 1838 in Pennsylvania. By the early 1860s, he was working as a shoemaker.
He enlisted in the Union army in May 1861, and he mustered in as a private in Company K of the 42nd Pennsylvania Infantry. He was 5 feet, 6 inches tall, with dark hair and brown eyes. The regiment took part in the Seven Days’ Battles, the Second Battle of Manassas, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Gettysburg, and the Overland Campaign. Confederate forces captured him near Mechanicsville, Virginia, on June 26, 1862, but he was eventually exchanged, and he rejoined his regiment. He mustered out in 1864.
He settled in Shirley, Pennsylvania, after leaving the army. He married Isabella Miller, and their daughter June was born around 1869. He earned a living “peddling goods.” He applied for a federal pension in November 1879 and eventually received one. He died in August 1882.
