Erasmus Darwin Gage
Erasmus Darwin Gage was born around 1823 in Yates County, New York, to Martin and Abigail Gage. His father was a farmer who managed a general store, and he died in 1841. He married Emeline Farrington on March 4, 1845, and they had at least three children: George, born on March 18, 1851; Viola, born on August 23, 1855; Hiram, born around 1858; and Mary, born on July 15, 1861. They lived in Seneca, New York, and Gage worked as a painter. By 1860, he owned $200 of personal property.

In September 1862, he received a commission as a captain in Company D of the 148th New York Infantry. The regiment took part in the Battle of Cold Harbor and the siege of Petersburg. He received a slight head wound near Petersburg, Virginia, on June 15, 1864, but he eventually recovered and rejoined the regiment. He died in the Battle of Darbytown Road on October 27, 1864.
