Dear Mother I thought I would write you a few lines to let you know where I am well we started from elmira about 12 oclock monday night and arived in Jersey City about 12 tuesday and then we crosed to NY and marched up Broad way about amile and staid untill 3 oclock then we started for Fort Hamilton we went down to Fulton Fery then took a street car and came here and wer quarterd in the barricks it is something like the barracks at elmira inside but it is a two story house two rooms below / and the Hospital above. the dineing room about 4 rods off we had Bread and Molasses and coffee for supper and our blankets and the soft side of a pine board to sleep on witch went very well as we did not sleep much the night before but feel rather stiff and sore this morning. we had coffee salt pork and bread for breakfast and about nine oclock we wer caled out for duty but it rained and we wer excused we are not confined very close we can go eney where after 9 untill sundown then look out for the pickets. there was fifteen of the 161 that came down with us Smith, Hill Prentis Gordon and myself of Co A there was some of our boys that come here two or three weeks ago and have gone on they say I dont know when we will go we have not bin examined yet / I rather think we have all bin reported fit for duty, but I dont know
