Dear companion
i write in answer to the nice letter that i received yesterday i am well that is as well as a soldier can expect to be when the gard house is full and the gards have to sleep on the ground out side these cold frosty nights our company furnishes 4 gards daley.
 
Dec 16             Dear well i go on detale
 
Dec 17..61 i was on gard last night. i am well / at present. we are hear yet at the Lamien Bridge the sun is three hours hy it is a beautiful day. i am sitting besid a tent near the bridge the cars have just past. they pass and repass daily. the gard house is at this end of the bridge. the artilery is a crost the track to my left the irish brigade is to my right conciquently the lay the river is in front & here is another train on the bridge the companys are drilling behind me and 16 or 17 soldiers at the pit nearly in front of me no wonder i cant hardly / write. we are hauling logs for winter quarters and have been for a week price is at lexington on the Mousoura 60 milds from hear may we will catch him yet if he does not vanish well id have got on the other side side of the of the tent to write well the officers bother me now. well i am sleepy and my writeing is on one knee and my sweet little testament is on the other in which i spend some pleasent hours but i do not get much time to read in it well be caus I must drill or on gard /

go on detail for forrage for the mules and on company drill, batalion drill, start in ten minuets notice for something go 3 or 4 milds on double quick i a bout ¾ of an hour then load corn of in three reliefs a corporal to each relief and if we have not corporals enoughf make one of a privat and it is nothing but gard a ox team of provision train well so it goes the gards house is genely full of our own men write to me Ruth, tell me the news i send you 5 more i sent you five in my last may god bless you all, J G Scoville
