well Ruth i have concluded to send my money to you for safe keeping and for you to use as you as you need it i can send 5 and 10 at a and maby the most of it will get through safe. i make enoughf to get tobacco and some other little notions by selling lemmon ade and washing for the other boys now Ruth wach the office and you will be apt to get enoughf to get meat and bread with if you can save any untill i come home all rite and if you use it all for the family use all ritte so let me know how much you receive. yours until death..John G Scoville /
 
Memphis is on the missepi river 95 milds from Corinth and some 250 milds belo Cairo at the mouth of the Ohio well i must close this and eat supper and go on piqet gard thank god there is scarcely any rebbels to shoot at us hear now all tho we are causus and careful and on our watch for the confounded scamps fare well for this time i wish you a hap nites rest kiss little toty for me bless her little sole
