            Philander Smith Scoville you must , i say must, (well i mean it to) be a good dutiful son and pleas dont abuse mother a mother O a mother that has done so much for you. Ruth just think how much responsibility rests on the mother you know they yes they have the most of the early instruction and care of rearing up there offspring. O i could write page after on that subject but time will not permit color that old white shirt and use it for [paper stain] if you can trade that [paper stain] towards a home you had best do it i will write to John Walker another time
 
i cant get a furlo no tis hard for me to write these last lines but the truth must come…but after another battle is fought at Memphis maby i will get one i will be with you if god / give me Jesus you may have all this world—give—me—Jesus

you may think it strange that i have not sent this before now but surcomstances did not permit i have had this clothing ready to send a long time but…well i will tell you all about it when i see you
 
i have quit cooking was on gard last night garding prisioners there fore i have untill noon to my self O dear Ruth i dream of home and loved ones there ofton would to god i was there JGS
