Calvin W. Lewis to Luther W. Hopkins, 9 July 1910
148 West Canton Street,
Boston, July 9, 1910.

Friend Hopkins,—I herewith enclose a letter lately received from Geo. Armistead of your city, which please return to me. You will see that he gives July 5, 1863, as the date of the death of Gen. Lewis Addison Armistead, though he doesn't say whether he gives the Oath from memory or how. I am still half inclined to think that you are right in your manscript in giving July 4 as the date, for you know that Long's book—which I recently mentioned in a letter to you—says that he died about noon on July 4. It is strange that I can't find any mention of his death in the newspapers of the time.

I wrote to Martin of Lynchburg two or three weeks ago, but no reply has come to hand.
Very truly yours, C. W. Lewis.

Geo. Armistead's father was a brother to Gen. L. A. Armistead, was he not?
