John Dennis Reed
John Dennis Reed was born around 1827 in Massachusetts to William and Mary Reed. By the early 1860s, he was working as a grocer in Taunton, Massachusetts.
 
In August 1862, he received a commission as a 2nd lieutenant in Company F of the 39th Massachusetts Infantry. The regiment took part in the Overland Campaign, the siege of Petersburg, and the Appomattox campaign. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant in September 1863. He was wounded near Weldon Railroad, Virginia, on August 18, 1864, but he eventually recovered and rejoined the regiment. He was promoted to captain in September 1864, and he mustered out on June 2, 1865.
 
He returned to Taunton after the war and resumed his work as a grocer. He married Helen F. Sproat on July 11, 1865. By 1870, they owned $14,000 of real estate and $4,000 of personal property. He served as a state legislator in the late 1870s. He applied for a federal pension in July 1884 and eventually secured one. He died of chronic nephritis in Taunton on September 16, 1890.
