Linden the home of Col. A. T. M. Filler, one mile from Lorettsville on the Berlin Turnpike along which both armies passed being so central was the scene of many war incidents, in which Mrs Filler figured frequently giving personal attention to the wounded and sick here also were entertained many officers of both sides Col. Filler being acquainted with Gens. Jackson, Hunton, Col Ashby and others, also Genl's Grant, Sheridan and others on the northern side. Genl McClellan crossed the Potomac at Berlin on his way to Richmond / and on the Linden farm were camped 40 000 soldiers for three weeks while the main army was passing. Col. F. was invited by Genl McClellan to ride with him some ten or twelve miles
 
The home and the farm were subject were suffer to all the deprivations and hardships that follow an army
 
Genls Meade and Burnside also crossed the Potomac here
 
Carl Schurz and other officers rested on the porch and were refreshed by a glass of buttermilk
 
One day Col Filler went to Berlin which was the trading point and / without a charge was arrested and taken to the "Old Capitol" where he was imprisoned for six weeks, his wife went down to intercede for him and met there a number of his friends one judge Hood a former law partner of Stantons. Stanton was then Secty of War. With his aid and others Col F was released without trial and given an oyster supper by Baker chief of detectives
 
Linden was also in the path of Sheridans famous burning raid and the match was ready to be laid to the barn when Col F recognized one among them and the barn was saved, but stock horses and cattle and fencing and all timber were destroyed and camped on a 75 acre field of wheat. After the war the County / was in a destitute condition. Col. F. learned the situation and [?] to bring horses into the County and sold to the farmers in time, selling a thousand or more. he then turned his attention to cattle and shipped direct from the Cherokee Nation and was first person to bring commercial fertilizer in the County. He was 18 yrs member of the Democratic State Central Committee
