Nathaniel S. Wheeler to Ellen F. Stanley, 22 October 1867
Fort Harker Kansas
Oct 22nd 1867
My Dear Nellie
We arrived here this A.M. at about 10 o'clock after a march of 18 miles after daylight the men were very anxious to reach the place and travailed faster than our horses could walk yesterday we marched 28 miles between 6 o'clock & 12 M. it was a pleasant sight to once more see the roosts of civilization the Iron horse puffing its way through this desolate country or nearly so, to come so sudden from a wild & savage country to civilization was a great change Yesterday we saw the Buffalo / Antelope, Wolf &c in all his glory. last night camped at the place of one of the recent Indian outrages on Plum Creek & today we see the elements of civilized life. It is only a few days of 18 months since we heard the Locomotive puffing his way along & now to see it in this country looks quite strange.
I received two letters & two papers from you here dated the 8th & 20th of Sept both directed to Fort Union N.M. on our arrival here we found orders to proceed to Jefferson Barracks Mo so as soon as we can get our things straightened up which will be by Friday we start. will then proceed to Louisville Ky to be paid / It will no doubt take some two weeks to get to Louisville if we have good luck getting mustered I was in hopes we would get mustered out at Riley but such is not the case our Mail is all at Fort Riley. probably quite a lot of it. am anxious to get it.
We have had a pleasant trip of it no rain, snow or [?] cold weather yesterday & today have been the coldest days we have seen good fine weather.
I have not heard from Capt Day yet. will write you soon.
Remember me to all
I am as ever yours Truly
Nat S Wheeler /

I have sold one horse tell Horace & shall sell one of the others as I left it in N.M. one I may take home for old acquaintance sake write soon yours truly
Nat
