Nathaniel S. Wheeler
Nathaniel S. Wheeler was born on August 11, 1832, in Plainfield, New Hampshire, to Rufus and Nancy Wheeler. He married Hannah Jane Mitchell on October 10, 1852.

He enlisted in the Union army on August 12, 1862, and he mustered in as a private in Company H of the 11th New Hampshire Infantry on September 2, 1862. In April 1865, he was promoted to 1st lieutenant in the 125th USCT Infantry. He was promoted to captain on April 21, 1866, and he mustered out on December 20, 1867.

He settled in Enfield, New Hampshire, after the war. His wife died sometime before 1868, and he married Ellen F. Stanley on April 6, 1868. They had at least five children: William, born around 1872; Harry, born around 1875; Daisy, born around 1878; Grace, born around 1879; and Robert, born around 1883. He worked as a painter, and by 1870, he owned $200 of personal property. He applied for a federal pension in June 1880 and eventually secured one. By 1890, he was suffering from malaria, which he had contracted during his wartime service. He died of chronic nephritis in Enfield on December 27, 1903.
