John Frieze
John Frieze was born on February 5, 1823, in Massachusetts to Jacob and Betsey Frieze. He married Jane Young Smith on July 28, 1846, and their daughter Sarah was born around 1850. They lived in Warren, Rhode Island, and Frieze worked as a jeweler.
 
In March 1862, he received a commission as a 1st lieutenant in Company M of the 3rd Rhode Island Heavy Artillery. The regiment served in South Carolina. He was promoted to major in September 1862 and then to lieutenant colonel in January 1863. He resigned in October 1863.
 
He settled in Providence, Rhode Island, after leaving the army, and he resumed his work as a jeweler. He lived in his sister’s household, and he may have separated from his wife. He applied for a federal pension in December 1896 and eventually secured one. He died in Rhode Island on March 7, 1903.
