Charles R. Smith was born around 1847 in Pennsylvania to Perry and Louisa Smith. His father was a lumberman who owned $1,000 of real estate and $275 of personal property by 1860. He grew up and attended school in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.
He enlisted in the Union army on March 4, 1864, and he mustered in as a private in Company G of the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry. He died in the Battle of Trevilian Station on June 11, 1864. As one comrade informed Smith’s sister, “We were ordered to charge the enemy and gain posession of the rail road…[Smith] was hit shot by a sharp shooter. the ball entered his body on the right side bellow the first rib, passed through, and came out under his left arm…he fell with his face towards the enemy.”
