Hamilton S. Hornor was born on July 22, 1844, in Arkansas to John and Elizabeth Hornor. His father was a merchant who owned $30,000 of real estate and $30,000 of personal property by 1860. He grew up and attended school in Helena, Arkansas, and the 1860 census described him as a “Gentleman.”
He enlisted in the Confederate army in 1863, and he mustered in as a private in Company C of the 1st Arkansas Cavalry. His brother, however, believed that he lacked the “physical ability to stand Cavalry or infantry service.” Confederate officials detailed him to the Commissary Department in December 1863, and it is unclear how long he remained in Confederate service.
After the war, Hornor earned a living as a merchant, and by 1870, he owned $20,000 of real estate and $5,000 of personal property. He married Caroline W. Polk on May 6, 1873, and they had at least two children: John, born around 1874; and May, born around 1879. He died in Phillips County, Arkansas, on September 2, 1915.
