Hannah Matilda Shunk was born on August 29, 1845, in Pennsylvania to Zephaniah and Mary Shunk. Her father was a lock tender who owned $1,500 of real estate by 1850. She grew up and attended school in Upper Providence, Pennsylvania, and her father died in the 1850s. By 1860, she owned $50 of personal property.
She married Charles Boileau around 1864, and they had at least five children: Mary, born around 1866; Adella, born around 1868; Cora, born around 1870; Frank, born around 1873; and Nathaniel, born around 1875. They lived in Upper Providence, and her husband worked as a farmer and carpenter. By 1870, they owned $2,000 of real estate. Her husband died in 1919, and by 1920, she was living in her daughter Cora’s household in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. She died there of apoplexy on May 7, 1927.
