Head Quarters 2d Brigade 3rd Division 2. Corps. Brig Insfor office Oct 4th 1864
 
Dear Mother,
                        We broke camp Oct 1st leaving our old quarters about 4 o’c PM moved about ¾ of a mile to what is called the Jones House then we embarked on board of cars which took us 4 miles to the left, crossing the Welvn Railroad, from here we marched on forth in the direction of Danville Railroad.  Halted at Poplar Grove Church and encamped during the night.  The next day the Brig moved to the left in the direction indicated to towards Danville R.R. at eight 8.00 in the mornin of the 2d the Brig engaged the enemy. capturing two lines of works our hop in our little  Brig was only 60 killed and wounded our forces are very near the Danville R.R. our Brig is layin still now. Ozias is well I have written this on my knee excuse all this from your Affectionate son
