William H. Gridley was born around 1834 in New York to Charles and Mary Gridley. His father was a farmer who owned $3,000 of real estate by 1850. He married Phebe Watson around 1859, and they had at least four children: Emma, born around 1861; Edward, born around 1864; Birtie, born around 1870; and Charles, born around 1871. He lived in Clyde, New York, and worked as a farmer. By 1860, he owned $2,800 of real estate and $470 of personal property. He moved to Macedon, New York, in the 1860s, and by 1870, he owned $14,400 of real estate and $4,500 of personal property. He supported the Republican Party, and he was elected assessor for Macedon in 1901. He died sometime after 1905.
