Boston, Aug. 3rd 1862—
Sunday Morning—

My Dear Sallie,
Here I am—arrived at 6½ this A.M. and am as well as could be expected under the circumstances. The circumstances are, that I had a very tedious ride from New York via Norwich, and am very tired and sleepy now. However you would like to know that I am here and well—hinc illae &c. Don't ever come to Boston by any route that brings you in the night. I went to bed about nine, but what with a supper-table by my bedside, heat, and bedbugs or musquitoes (doesn't make any difference which—been used to both), I got no sleep whatever; got up and paced the deck for about three hours; went ashore at 1½ A.M. & took the train; couldnt get to sleep till past Worcester; got into a daze, dreamed I was killing a rat, gave a yell, leaped up & tapped an elderly gentleman sitting in front gently on his bald head; ejaculated "Pardon me sir"; offered part of my seat to a fine looking young lady who accepted; was greatly chagrined at hearing her ask the conductor if he knew where her son was; found Bill Whitney out of town, am to stop there on my return, came to this tavern, had five stout men stand / behind my chair while at breakfast; went up town, and came very near being lost; came up to my room No. 155, found the mercury at 90o, took off my coat, rang violently for pen, ink, and paper, and am writing a letter to you. Dont you think I'm pleasantly situated? I leave for Portland at 7.30 tomorrow morning. Had a very good time in New York. Went over to Staten Island to see Mr. Taylor, but he was in [?], his youngest child having died quite suddenly. Mr Dre's sister invited me to dinner, gave me a cooling draught of lemonade and was otherwise kind and cordial. Geo. Dre enters Yale the next term. It was concerning him that Mr. T. wrote me. They all spoke kindly of Father & Frank, and hoped to see them in Clifton again. In all probability the Mackies are in your village. I saw them safely aboard the boat, and put them under the escort of T. Harland & J. Sterry. I met Bro. Danl W. Coit on Broadway Friday, but have not seen any one here that I know. My fellow traveler's name is on the book here but I haven't come across him yet. I'm going to hear the Rev. A. L. Stone this P.M. He's a smart man. If you or anybody wish to write me, you may direct Care of Gen. James Whitney Cambridge Mass. Please ask Father to forward my letters to that address. I expect two or three. Give much love to all the family, and believe me
Y'r aff brother Charles—
