William H. Powell was living in Virginia by the early 1860s. In April 1862, he received a commission as a 1st lieutenant in Company A of the 33rd Virginia Infantry. The regiment took part in the Seven Days’ Battles, the Second Battle of Manassas, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville, and the Battle of Gettysburg. He was promoted to captain in February 1863. He was wounded at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, and he resigned on October 27, 1863. He died sometime after 1863.
