Emily D. Ayres to Cousin, 20 December 1872
Sacketts Harbor Dec 20th/72.
My Dear cousin
I have not been over to the garrison yet because it has been so snowy. We got here last night but we can not go into our house yet because our furniture has not come yet, we are staying at the "Earl House" now about a quarter of a mile from the garrison. Mary and Charles have gone over to see the garrison and I hope I can go tomorrow. When we got to Watertown I was awful tired and we staid at the "Woodruff Hotel" it is a splendid hotel and watertown is a handsome place and the streets are crowded with carts and the horses are all hitched one side of the / sleighs. We did not go over to "Sacketts Harbor" that night because it was snowing fast but we met father at the depot.
Mack the dog was not allowed to be in the sleeping car so he had to be in the baggage car from Boston to Albany so we got him the next morning. I did not sleep much in the sleeping car because every time the car stopped I woke up but we had pretty good beds. mother said she did not sleep at all Where we are staying now the beds are horrid and we had to put some of our coats under the pillow to make it high enough. We had a splendid ride from Watertown in an open three seated sleigh. Have you told Julia to write to me yet. I hope you will write to me soon. Give my love / to all. With much love for yourself I remain your
Affectionate cousin
Emily D. Ayres.
P. S. Tell Annie I will write to her next.
