Emily Dearborn Ayres was born on April 2, 1859, in Portland, Maine, to Romeyn and Emily Ayres. Her father was an officer in the United States Army who owned $8,000 of real estate and $3,000 of personal property by 1870. She accompanied her father to his military posts. In 1860, they were living in Fortress Monroe in Virginia. A decade later, they were living in Portland, and by 1880, they were living in Baltimore, Maryland.

Howell on February 5, 1884, and they had at least two children: Anna, born around 1885; and Mary, born around 1886. Her husband died on May 2, 1887. By 1910, she was living with her daughters in Mount Sterling, Kentucky. She moved to Rush, Kentucky, in the 1910s, and she died of aortic stenosis and mitral insufficiency in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, on June 10, 1932.
