June 14th 1862
Dear Brother I take my pen in hand to write you a few lines to let you know how we are getting along we are all well and hope youre are the same last wendnesday week I got a letter from lousville it said your arm was broke and wanted $20 to get some Clothes and come home on so we sent the money Thursday morning Thursday evening I got another letter right from you at Gallatin so saturday we telegraphed to louisville to arrest the man that came for it yesterday he telegraphed back that the man came for the money and told such a straight story about it that he would not take him up but we sent word / Back if the man was to be found to arest him but if he was not to describe him we have no answer yet I have potatoes the size of a hulled wallnut the nicest Corn from our house to freeport people says every body between the ages of 18teen and 45 has to muster 2 a year for 5 years and every body that does not muster 8 days in every year for 80 years they have to muster with Corn stalks the others camps out 8 days at a time they have their guns amunition eatables tents and traveling paid them they have to furnish their own unicorn which only costs $7
