William H. Bone to Adrian Bone, 10 August 186X
Aug 10th
Dear Mother.
I now take my pen in hand to let you know how I am geting along and what we are doing. I have got well and am doing finely. We arived here yesterday morning without any damage to any one and were marched to our ward then the rool was called and we was at liberty to go where we pleased. the first thing that we did was to get ready for the night we have beds large enough one to sleep in they are about two feet high we also have a straw tick apiece and a quilt each ward has about seventy five in it. but we / were not satisfied with what was in ours and gathered up the best that was in camp and laid away the poor ones. then the captain selected three men to get dinner. We had army crackers ham and coffee the crackers are about five inches square. then we run all over camp and saw all we could untill night came there was two fiddlers in another company about a dozen of the boys went down there and danced awhile all the balance went to bed except the captain he did not go untill half past one. he was busy all that time fixing the books so that we / could be musterd in Monday morning. he appears to take a great interest in his men. this morning the boys all got up early the cooks prepared breakfast they had light bread meat and coffee. then some of the boys went to reading and some to playing one way and another at noon we had been soup and good bread for dinner. Ben Jeffrey brought some Note books down and he gathered up some singers and we had a good sing. there is a nice bath house in evry ward where we can take a bath whenever we want to a ward is a building about one / hundred feet long and thirty feet wide nicely whitewashed and a plenty of air. there is Preaching in the 15 ward this evening some of us are going down to hear it. I am glad I volonteered at freeport for they are more civil quiet than any of the others. I have nothing more to write to day. Please remember me in your Prayers.
your beloved son.
