Thomas Powell enlisted in the Union army in 1861 and mustered in as a 1st lieutenant in Company E of the 65th Ohio Infantry on October 9, 1861. He earned a promotion to captain on December 1, 1862, and became the regimental chaplain on July 14, 1864. He mustered out on January 2, 1866. He married a woman named Harriet, and he died sometime before January 1884.
