Thomas Powell was probably living in Ohio by the early 1860s. In 1861, he received a commission as a 1st lieutenant in Company E of the 65^th Ohio Infantry. The regiment took part in the Battle of Shiloh, the siege of Corinth, the Battle of Perryville, the Battle of Stones River, the Battle of Chickamauga, the Atlanta campaign, and the Battle of Nashville. He earned a promotion to captain on December 1, 1862, and he became the regimental chaplain on July 14, 1864. He mustered out on January 2, 1866. He married a woman named Harriet, and he died sometime before January 1884.
