David Burhans to Cathaline Stafford, 5 January 1863
Camp Near Bells Plains Jan. 5th 1862 [sic]
Mrs Stafford

Dear Madam
I regret deeply to inform you of the death of your husband Isaac Stafford. This sad intelligence, I have no doubt, you have received in advance of this, but as I was officially notified, I deem it no more than my duty to inform you of his death, the cause &c. He died on the 30th of Dec. at Trinity Church Hospital Georgetown D.C. He was wounded on the 13th in right leg above the knee, to such an extent, that immediate amputation was necessary and although he received as good attention as the army affords, and was placed in a Hospital within a few days he could not survive. As Capt. / of his Co I can do nothing towards securing his bounty &c, but I will give you what little information I can. You are entitled to a pension of ninety six dollars a year, also he has coming seventy five dollars as U. S. bounty, and just three months pay coming as he enlisted on the thirtieth of August. There are agents who will attend to all this for you for a liberal percentage. If I have omitted anything or any further information is desired please write me and it shall receive attention

Yours Very Respt
David Burhans
