Dear Wife I now take the oppertunity to write a few lines to you to let you know that I am well at present and hope these few lines may find you the same Cathaline we are now abou eight hundred miles from albany and have had long marches now we are in camp and expect to lay here on accout of the mud and we have had orders not to fight in thirty days on account that thay want to settle the war we here that england is triing to make peice and if that is the case I would like it very much I expect that you have lots of snow out whare you are but we have not seen over one inch since last winter and we have had to march on Sunday for a good while but now we have / had orders not to march any more on that day when we started from albany we had one hundred and seven men but now we have seventy six thay have run away from the company thay have taken thare oath to lay down thare lives for the union if it was recuired of them but I hope we may all return home again we are injoying ourselves as well as we can we live on beens pork rice hard crackers and coffee you was telling about beny geting maried tell him I wish him much joy and hope I may see him and his bride Cathaline I think about you very often and wish I could see you and little Sindy and the other little woodchuck and I want you to tell me weather little Sindy is well or not and kiss them for me I would like to see my big boy and see if he has / got black eyes or not I must have a little sport to keep up good courage I have no more to write at present but still remain your affectionate husband
