Sir:
Your request of the 18th inst., concerning your son, came duly to hand. I sent immediately for him, and found him happy and contented. It would be impossible for him to get a furlough without some very good reasons (such as sickness, or death) upon which to base an application. The idea of his being a Paroled Prisoner and nothing to do, is not reason enough in the eyes of the War Department, through whose hands it must pass before it could be granted. However there will be an exchange soon, probably next week, and then all will be returned to their regiments, so there aint much prospect of his lying idle long.
Respectfully Yours
