Sarah E. D. Smith
Sarah E. D. Smith (maiden name: Downs) was born on February 9, 1831, in Newburyport, Massachusetts, to Jeremiah and Abigail Downs. She grew up in Newburyport, and her father died in 1850. She married George Smith on March 24, 1850, and the couple probably had one child. Her husband died sometime before 1870.
 
During the Civil War, she worked as a nurse at the Trinity Church General Hospital in Georgetown, D.C. She started working there in September 1862, and she earned a reputation for her kindness and “useful conduct.”
 
By 1870, she was living with her mother and brother in Boston, Massachusetts, and she was working as a nurse. She died of phthisis in Boston in January 1873.
