My Dear Wife
                        I have been moved since last i rote to you from city Point to Baltimore 40 miles this side of washington i am well cared fore as soldiers genarly are i am very helpless very i cannot sit up or lay down hardly but i am a little better i have got an awfull hole in my thigh by the pocket and so out by the hip behind right by the hole natur gave me we had to lauf to see how near it came to my other hole it will not let me rest the doctors say that i made a very narrow escape and and about seventy five has looked at / it it is snowing hear this morning and it cleared up and then we heard the church bell & would like to went but could not becaus we was not fit to the snow blows and the wind howls very loud we have a good coal fire and good beds i do not think i will ever get back to the army i got an awfull slug in the thigh i have one of your letters that was in my pocket the bullet went through it and i will send it to you you must keep it i want it wen i get well it is very hard writing i have to lay down and am very weak and tired the worst job is wen i have a passage it takes me an hour to get over it i am in good sperits and good apitite a wound is not like sickness you are hungry all / the time now wen you get through this letter i want you to let mother have it for i cannot write to evry body now i am to badly off if i had not got hit i would have been home i think now for i had a fourlough in and it would have went through for i had a good excuse but i have a better one now and i will be home a long time i would like to see you very much but must be content with writing to you and i hope soon to get a letter from you and all the rest pleas tell them to write me a letter for i am unable if you knew the pain i am in now you would not think about it but how could i write at all good Bye my dear wife and show it to mother and any one elce you see fit Henry H Covert
