Alexander C. MacNulty to David Smolk, 22 November 1893
Hancock & MacNulty,
            Attorneys-at-Law.
                        510 F Street, N. W.
Washington, D.C., Nov. 22nd, 1893.

Capt. David Smolk,
            Mallett Creek, Ohio.

Dear Sir:

Having succeeded to the business of Mr. Edward B. Bury, pension attorney of this city, and upon examination of the papers in his files, I find a claim of yours, which is almost complete, and which, at a very little exertion upon your part and mine will yield you, in my judgement, not only a handsome increase in your present pension, but in addition quite a large sum of back-pension

It seems that you originally claimed pension for several disabilities, among other things for jaundice, bowel trouble and hydrocele.

In my judgement you are entitled to the total of your rank $17. per month, for rheumatism and resulting disease of heart, for which you are now pensioned under the old law, and hydrocele.

You can readily see that you would be entitled to quite a large sum of arrears of pension on account of the hydrocele at that, or even at a lower, rate.

As you will see by the circulars which I enclose you, I have had long and practical experience in the handling of pension claims, and shall be glad to do all in my power to aid you in securing the additional pension indicated above.

I enclose you power of attorney in the claim, which please execute and return to me at once, and I will attend to the matter promptly and carefully.

I would also ask you to send me the addresses of two or more of your friends who can testify that you were afflicted with hydrocele, or swelling in the region of the privates, at the date of your return home from the Army, and that you have been disabled thereby during each year since.

Hoping to hear from you at an early date, I am,
Very truly yours,
A. C. MacNulty
