Camp near Petersburgh July 2nd 1864
Dear Sister
I now write you a few lines to let you know how i get along. we are lying here in the Breast works sweating like horses. we have got our tents up over us for a shade but still it is very warm. we was relieved and went back to the rear and got 3 day rest we came back to the breast works last night. we have not been in any engagement since the 18th but i expect their will be some thing done soon. are you going to have any dooings on the 4 of July. I supose you have great times picking strawberries and eating short cake. you may send me one if you can just as well as not. the Huckelberries are ripe here and the black berries are most ripe. the Peaches and Aples are quite large and winter wheat is fit to cut
I wish i could be at home now the rest of the summer to help you with the work. how does Father & Mother stand this hot weather how does the Widow Chapman get along and Mary Hank. I heard a month ago that Pery B. was sent back to his Regiment. how does Janet and family get along. Give my respects to Bridget and all the rest of the folks down in the hollow. how does Martin Southeron get along what sort of a chap is he. does he and his Mother quarl like cats. who lives on Tom McMahons place this summer I cant think of any more to write at present so i will bring this to a close I am well hoping this will find you the same I remain your
