Andrew Morrison Jr. to Andrew Morrison and Sister, 16 July 1864
Camp in the woods near
Petersburg July 16th 1864
Dear Sister
I now write you a few lines to let you know how i get along. we came out of the breast works on thursday night and came in to a piece of woods we had never camped in before so we had to go to work and clean it all up slick and nice. I intended to send home a newspaper this week but there has been none round this morning and i dont believe there will be any to day the mail did not come up last night. if the mail comes to night i expect to hear from you. we have got the mails very regular so far but the Reble Raids in to Maryland may stop the mails for a few days / there is a good deal of cannonading going on to day some of it a good ways off we can just hear it. we enjoy our selvs very well considering all things we are not so lonesome as you would think we was but still i would rather be at home to help Father to do the haying and the rest of the work. I am afraid it will be too much for him. he must get all the help he can with it. I supose Mother is out to work when she feels like it but she must not work too much rather spend a dollar or two more than to work your selvs down sick when is the other draft coming of in Humphrey. I wrote to Leonard a good while ago but i have not heard from him yet have they ben out to see you lately. has he got his / fast mare yet how many cows has he got this summer I wish i could get some of his pears to eat when they get ripe. i hope he will sail clear of the draft again. how does the Widdow get along with her work this summer how does Bridget get along is she at home now when did you see Jane Byrne. I would like to come home and see all the folks again. When you write send me word how delt gets along if you know any thing about it does Andrew learn any thing at school this summer. why did they not get the one they had last winter. I cant think of any thing of any importance to write so i will draw to a close I am well hoping this will find you well I remain your Brother

as i had not room enough left to finish Fathers letter i will take part of this to do it. I thought of sending a newspaper with this but i have not seen any round yet i will send one if i can get it. you must get all the help you can with the hay and not work too hard at it. you must do the best you can with it for i cant get home to help you with it this year.
every thing is quiet just now
I cant think of any more to write at present only that I am well and in good health and hoping this will find you all enjoying the same
Blessing I remain your Affectionate Son
A Morrison
