Camp Knox Dec 10th 1861 D C 1861
 
Dear wife I received your Leter and was happy to hear from you and know you was well My health is good at presant I have had a bad cold I got it comeing out the first fortnight whe were here it was as uncomfortable as it is in maine at that season of the year it is lovely weather here now & has ben for about a week it is about such weather as whe have in Sept in Maine grass is as green here now as it was in Sept in Maine our Regiment I expect will stop here this winter whe are building baracs for winter quarters about a 100 rods from our presant Quarters encampment I have ben vasenated to day for the Poc our holle company has ben whe have ben paid off to day up to the 30 of Oct I have given 8$ dollars to the Conel to send to you Conel wild Govoner Washburn Aid is here he will take it to Augusta to Govener Washburn & he will see that you / have it my pay amounted to 10.40 Copporals gets no more pay than Privates the 30th of December there will 26 dollars more be due me you will draw 24$ of that this time they paid all there was due us from the time whe enlisted up to the 30 of Oct they thought whe should want that ourselves for the future all whe shall have paid to us will be the balance over what I sined for you on the alotment roll wich will be one dollar per month rather a small amount for spending money You want me to rite what I see I dont have a chance to see much I have ben by the Presidend house it is a neat looking building it is maid of white marble it looks rich & nat I intend to get a pass to go down to the city & over to the maine third maine Regiment I cant rite you news eny enny war news for you kno more about the war than I do I see plenty of Soldiers here they are encamp in evry / direction around us the Rebbeles will never atack attack Washington in my opinion Whe have lost one of our company He had the Lung Feavor whe have food & clothing enogh for our comfort I feel well contented I have just ben cald out of my ten to see a Balloon it is so far off it looks verry somal I should think it is a crost the Potomac I want you should rite all the particulars about home I want you to rite how much you got for the oxen and how you are get in alon I had a long leter from Lemuel & Nancy & tom Pap[?] I saw Peat Bradstreet her to day he told me he should go to maine in a bout a week I asked him to tell Capt Neal to tell Lauraet that I was well he said he would you may kiss the babys for me I want you to rite as soon as you get this from your Husband
