Grace T. Katon (maiden name: Barker) was born around 1814 in Maine. She married Alexander T. Katon on December 17, 1839, and they had at least nine children: Lauraett, born on December 20, 1840; William, born on April 29, 1842; Mary, born on March 19, 1844; Remington, born on September 2, 1845; Hannah, born on April 17, 1849; Thomas, born on November 7, 1853; Lucy, born on November 4, 1856; Frederick, born on November 25, 1857; and Lemuel, born on August 21, 1859. They lived in Pittston, Maine, and her husband worked as a farmer. By 1860, they owned $1,200 of real estate and $416 of personal property. Her husband served in the Civil War, and he died on July 8, 1862. She applied for a widow’s pension in September 1862 and eventually received one.
She remained in Pittston with her children, and by 1870, she owned $1,000 of real estate and $350 of personal property. She moved to Washburn, Maine, in the 1870s, and by 1900, she was living in her daughter Mary’s household in Pittston. She died there on August 19, 1905, from “ills incident to advanced age.”
