Vig Virginia on the road to Richmond May 11/62
Dear wife I received your leter to day was happy to hear from you whe left Camp Scot near Yorktown one week to day the Rebels evacuated on Saturday & whe started on Sunday there was a hard battle fought on Monday at fort Macgruder Before we got up whe could here the fireing all the way up whe was so near when our men made their last charge whe herd their yel when they started whe got there that night wich was Monday wendsday morning I went over the battl field I saw a great menny dead Rebels & dead horses they got our men buried the day before it look as if they had a ruff time whe are a bout 45 miles from Richmond to day being Sunday McLellend orders us to rest the Rebels left Mac Gruder Monday night in the night after the fight whe are following up their retrat I cant stop to rite much you will see the account in the papers the mail is most ready to go out you had beter sell the steer calf I think if you can get a good price for him & keep the heifer Do as you / think best I think you had beter try and get Mr Carpenter or some one elce to pasture the colt I dont no when I shall get paid of a gain I dont see why you did not get the other sooner Tell children their kisses arived here safe I am well Give my love to the children I must close you will see by the papers the 11 had one man shot when whe were out on a reconnoisance I was acquainted with him
