Remington D. Katon was born on September 2, 1845, in Pittston, Maine, to Alexander and Grace Katon. His father was a farmer who owned $1,200 of real estate and $416 of personal property by 1860. He grew up and attended school in Pittston, Maine, and by 1870, he was working in a sawmill. He married Annie E. Quimby on August 27, 1870, and they had at least six children: Walter, born around 1871; Ida, born around 1874; Arthur, born around 1877; Grace, born around 1880; William, born around 1885; Florence, born around 1887. They lived in Pittston, and by 1880, he was working as a teacher. They moved to Hallowell, Maine, in the late 1800s and then to Augusta, Maine, in the early 1900s. He died of heart disease in Augusta on April 28, 1910.
